I recently had the great fortune to attend a four day workshop with Denyse Schmidt in Napa, California. The workshop was organized by the Modern Quilt Guild and was hosted by Pokey Bolton in her gorgeous Art Barn.
When my friend Billi and I went to pick up our rental car, the guy gave us a Mustang convertible for super cheap! Score!
Pokey made a reservation for all of us the first night at the Culinary Institute in Napa. I was so busy enjoying that I failed to take any food porn pictures for you. However it was THE BEST meal and I highly recommend you go there if you visit Napa.
The next day we got to work. We started by choosing a super simple traditional block to riff off of.
Look how cool Billi’s L-blocks look already up there on the design wall!
This was the nicest group of quilters! We all got along really well and it was a wonderful mix of talents and personalities.
I chose 1/2 square triangles and tried this crazy thing…
which didn’t work out so then I did this…
There were lots of wine breaks on the porch. Duh.
Denyse had us visit a thrift store to pick up clothes with one fabric we loved and one that we hated. We then did the paper bag improv exercise. Small, medium and large pieces are put into three different bags. You HAVE to use what you pull out.
When we started the second round, the first two pieces I pulled literally made me nauseated together. But then look what happens when the master arranges them…
Pretty cool, huh?
We ran out of wine so Billi and I got more!
Lunches were incredible. Pokey had hired Chef Elizabeth from Edible Education to bring us lunch every day.
All the ingredients were so fresh, some even pulled directly from Pokey’s garden! The tomatoes were to die for.
There was a lot of silliness (this photo was taken pre-wine, btw)
On Saturday night we had a BBQ by Pokey’s pool that was muy delicioso.
What? Who’s got all that food on her plate?
As if we hadn’t had enough wine all day, we still managed to have some awesome cocktails at night. It was an engaging, enlightening, entertaining weekend.
